By Anonymous PORTLAND, ME April 8, 2004 -– Scotia Prince Cruises has offered to organize, run, and host the 20th annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Sea-Smile Cruises sailing May 1st and May 2nd. After 19 consecutive years of MDA Cruises, the event was without an organizer this year. Recognizing how important the event is, the company decided to step outside its traditional role of ship charterer and take over full organization and financial backing for the cruises.
“Our entire team is running hard getting ready for the tourism season, but we feel this is an important community event” stated Matthew Hudson, Chairman, Scotia Prince Cruises. “We hope that the Greater Portland region also thinks this is an important event and supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association by participating in these three charitable cruises”.
Over the years the Sea-Smile Benefit Cruises have raised more than $350,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
“The funds raised in Maine, will stay in Maine.” says Ann Marie Tucker, District Director, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Portland office. “We are very appreciative that Scotia Prince Cruises has stepped in to fill such an important role in our local community”.
Each cruise includes live entertainment and fun events. Scotia Prince Cruises buffet and à la carte dining is available separately. The Muscular Dystrophy Association is active in supporting programs aimed at increasing the awareness of neuromuscular diseases. They sponsor two neuromuscular disease clinics in Maine, one at Maine Center in Portland and one at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. They also offer assistance in the purchase and repair of wheelchairs, leg braces and Augmentative Communication Devices, as well as, support groups, clinic transportation and even a summer camp.
In 2002 Scotia Prince Cruises, operating its Maine to Canada route for 5 months, generated direct and indirect local economic impacts of more than $53 million by attracting tourist dollars to Maine; through local employment; through crew spending; and through provisioning for the company’s cruise ferry. Since 1970, Scotia Prince Cruises’ economic impact in Maine has totaled $1.8 Billion (2002 dollars).
In 2004 the company will operate the route from April through November. This operating extension into the “shoulder seasons” will generate additional vacationers, tourism spending and SPC corporate spending which in turn will strengthen Maine’s tourism industry further and support more tourism jobs.
